日本が海外に与える影響について、考えたことがあるだろうか。
私は中国に行くまで、中国で日本のアニメや映画、音楽があれほど知られているとは認識していなかったし、この本を読むまで、日本の文学が中国文化人たちに愛され、翻訳されていることを知らなかった。

中国に関わる人なら誰しも一度は耳にしたことのある有名な本屋さん。それが内山書店であり、この本は、大正から昭和初期にかけて、上海の共同租界日本居留民区にあった内山書店の始まりから、そこに集まる人々の交流、そして終焉までを描いている。

日本人、中国人分け隔てなく接し続け、どんなときもその姿勢を崩さなかった内山夫婦と、そんな夫婦に絶大な信頼を寄せ、自らの身が危うくなっても執筆活動をやめなかった魯迅の絆に、学ぶべき姿を見たような気がした。人々が知識や心の充足を求め、またそこで出会った人と交流し、つながりを広げていけるような自由であたたかい場所。そんな場所が、今、日本と中国にも必要なのではないだろうか。
