第12回：「此処から世界へ」 －上野由美子さん－

大学で中国語を専攻しながらも、卒業後はゲーム部門でデザイナーとして就職し、初の海外駐在はアメリカだという上野さん。中国プロジェクトで上海に来ることになって初めて、中国と関わることになったのだという。

「おかしな話なんですけど、大学で外国語を専攻していたこともあってアメリカへの派遣が決まったんです。アメリカへ行ってからは心もアメリカの方を向いていて、派遣期間が終わってもいつかまたここで働きたいなあと思っていました」

帰任後しばらくは日本で黙々と働いていた上野さんだったが、この頃上海に子会社を設立 する話が持ち上がった。出張で何度か上海を訪れ、そのエネルギーに魅了されていた上野さんは立候補することにした。
「中国の市場はこれからだと思っていましたし、人の多さにエネルギーを感じたんです。この頃ちょうど上海人の新入社員の女の子と仲良くしていたので、上海って楽しそうだなと思っていました」
大学での中国語専攻という経歴もあって、もちろん採用。上海人の新入社員・エンちゃんと一緒に二人で上海にやってきた。
「開発チーム兼事務所という形で、何でもやりました。でも、半年たった頃本社の方針でゲーム部門を閉鎖することになったんです。エンちゃんと何度も話し合って、二人で辞めることにしました」
2004年、二人は会社を辞め、ゲーム会社を立ち上げた。携帯ゲームの開発と、上海支部の立ち上げで得たノウハウを活かしたコンサル業がメインで、通訳なども引き受けた。
「経験はあったので、やれることはたくさんありました。やりがいのある仕事というよりは、やれることを選択した感じでしたね」

仕事に困ることはなく、毎日は充実していた。ただ、何か疑問を感じていた。
「私たちは流れにのってここまでやってきた。嫌いじゃないけど、好きというわけでもなかったのかもしれません。だから、少しでもいやなことがあると、もういいやという気持ちになってしまっていたんだと思います」
二人が本当にやりたいこと、それは意外な縁が運んできた。
エンちゃんの美大時代の同級生で陶芸家の陳くんがエンちゃんにサポートを依頼してきたのだ。
「陳くんとは、上海に来たばかりの頃にエンちゃんに紹介されて会っていました。その頃彼は美術の先生をしていて、陶芸家としてまだ独立していなかったんです。それが、だんだん陶芸がメインになってきて、制作に没頭したいという時期だったんでしょうね。エンちゃんは信頼できるし、芸術のこともよくわかっているし、パートナーとして最高だったんだと思います」

こうして二人は、陳くんをサポートしながら磁器教室を開いたり海外での販売戦略を立てたりと、再び忙しい日々を送ることになった。2007年は日本から始めて、アメリカ、ヨーロッパなど世界への展開を考えている。
「日本で知り合ったエンちゃんがきっかけで中国と関わることになって、今上海から世界へ向けてやっていこうとしている。大学で中国語を専攻して、その後まったく関係のないゲーム会社に就職したけど、そこでアメリカに行ったことも今思えば全然ムダなことじゃないんです。人から見たら今までやってきたことは、バラバラかもしれませんが、私の中ではすべてひとつにつながっているように思います」

日本から上海、そして世界へ。どんな環境にあっても笑顔を忘れず、楽しむコツを知っている上野さんは、新たな目標に向かいつつもやはり上海ライフを満喫している。それが、大切な縁を呼ぶ、秘訣なのかもしれない。
